The other morning Ellie and I were snuggling in a chair in our living room, enjoying a couple minutes of quiet together in our pajamas before the chaos of the day began. She gently stroked my cheek, looked deep into my eyes, and lovingly whispered, "You're looking old today, Mom. In the mornings you look like a grandma. Your eyes look lumpy underneath. But I still love you."
I'm proud to say I swallowed my responses, which would have been:
1. To "You're looking old today, Mom": Yes, dear. You pop out 4 kids in 2-1/2 years and see how you look at age 37.
2. To "In the mornings you look like a grandma.": Maybe if you little darlings would allow me to get a full night of uninterrupted sleep, I'd look a little fresher and more wide awake in the morning.
3. To "Your eyes look lumpy underneath": See #1 and #2 above.
