January 2015

Minnesota treated us to a beautiful sunset on one of our last days there; both Dave and I have deep roots in MN, and it was certainly hard to pull them up and leave for a very different environment!

Our kids, while I'm sure they were nervous, looked like seasoned travelers in the busy MSP airport. We had a morning flight to Phoenix, and the sunshine and warmth of AZ when we arrived was probably a bit of shock to all of us after leaving such a bitterly cold day in MN. On the bus to pick up our rental car, the kids were all eyes, looking for their first glimpses of cactus, palm trees, and any snakes or scorpions they might see!

We weren't able to take the kids to the house until the day after we arrived, and of course, they were so excited! There was a mad scramble to pick out their rooms, which was thankfully settled quickly and without bloodshed.

As I think I mentioned before, we had to wait a few days until our furniture arrived; we did, however, make a trip to Ikea to pick up some bar stools for our counter, along with a few other necessities. Our first dinner at the house - we'd only had 3 stools assembled by dinnertime, so Zoe had to sit on the counter:

We wasted no time hiring out the landscaping for our backyard; the thought of Winnie and the kids tracking dirt into a brand new house was not appealing, and we luckily found a good crew that was able to complete the job quickly!

We also got out and started some sightseeing with the kids right away. We'd wanted to distract them a bit from feeling homesick, and keep them excited about the move and AZ in general.  Canyon Lake is absolutely beautiful, and they had a great time in Tortilla Flat with Grandma and Lisa along for dinner, too.

I'd mentioned before that Ellie had to share her 9th birthday with the moving guys, but with Grandma and Lisa's help, we still managed to pull off some gifts and a birthday cake for her!
